The Verona High School girls soccer team has started its 2023 season with a loss, a win and, yesterday, a big tie. Verona battled West Orange, ranked No. 11 on NJ.com’s Top 20 list, to a 1-1 draw at home.

Senior Sam Rizzi scored Verona’s goal in the second half, assisted by sophomore Emerson Garrett. Rizzi, one of four seniors on Verona’s roster, had a strong scoring season last year, and is off to a good start this year, with three goals and three assists already to her credit.

Garrett has put up two goals under her own name this year, while junior Victoria Niziolek is tied with Rizzi at three and fellow juniors Isabelle Heimerle and Kaitlyn Pietrucha have one apiece. Senior Mia Viganola and freshman Molly Daggs have been splitting the goalkeeping duties, with three and five saves respectively.

Verona will be back in action on Tuesday, September 19, when the team hosts Caldwell for a 4 p.m. start.
