Three outings, three defeated opponents: the Verona High School volleyball team has started the 2023 season with a bang.

Verona opened with a 2-0 win over Montclair Kimberley Academy in the team’s home opener on September 7. They traveled to Millburn on September 11 and came home with a 2-0 win there too. Yesterday, Verona routed key opponent Caldwell, another 2-0 win.

The MKA game was 25-11, 25-11. Senior Cara DeMars led the team with 16 service points and three aces. Marley Kramer, a fellow senior, was close behind with 10 service points and 15 assists. Emily Theobald and Kendra Santos channeled their expertise into six and five kills respectively.

Millburn was a tougher contest, but Verona prevailed 26-24, 27-25. DeMars again led on service points, with 10, while Santos and Kramer added seven and five, and Santos had five kills. Theobald delivered a key game block.

Verona went back to blowout mode when it hosted Caldwell, going 25-13 and 25-3. Katie Meehan, another senior leader, cleared the way with 20 service points. Almost every member of the Verona squad had a hand in the big kill momentum, with five for Santos, four apiece for Emily Theobald and her sophomore sister Jessica. DeMars added two kills and Olivia Baureis, Abbey Donnelly and Katie Meehan had one each.

Verona will be back in action today, hosting Livingston at 4 p.m. The Lancers are 4-0 on their season.
