Maggie Ashley, seen here on Senior Night, led Verona with three goals and an assist in the Montclair game.

Last Wednesday, the Group 4 Montclair Mounties used a fast start to take a 6-2 halftime lead and then held on just long enough to defeat the Verona Lady Hillbillies, 9-8, at Verona’s Sellitto Field.

Verona had to scramble to stop the bleeding after spotting the Mounties a 5-0 lead in the first half, and worked hard in the second half to climb back into it. The Lady Hillbillies nearly pulled off the upset in a spirited second half that saw Verona outscore the Mounties 6-3.

Verona was led by senior captain Maggie Ashley’s game-high four points–three goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Cecilia “CC” Courter and sophomore midfielder Maggie Lonsinger were right behind with two goals each. Junior attack Julia Mackey (two assists) and junior midfielder Ally Madigan (one goal, one assist) also made key contributions on the offensive end.

Sophomore goalie Skyler Freedman recorded nine saves in the close loss.

Verona, now 9-6 overall, will look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, May 8, when they host an 8-4 Morris Catholic squad at Sellitto Field at 4 p.m. before ending the regular season on Friday, May 11 at Mount Olive. The state playoffs are expected to start on Tuesday, May 15.
