Spring Track Teams Open Strong

The girls and boys track & field teams opened with wins against Newark Central and North Star Academy.
The Verona High School’s girls and boys track & field teams opened their season last week with strong performances at home and at the very competitive Aviator Relays in Hasbrouck Heights. In the home meet last Wednesday, both Verona teams had wins against Newark Central and North Star Academy.

Verona was one of 26 schools competing in the Aviator Relays. The girls took second place in both the 4 x 800m (Brianna Rigney, Bridget O’Donnell, Kathleen Nagy, Kate Ashley) and distance medley (Brianna Rigney, Alex DeVivo, Bridget O’Donnell, Kate Ashley). They had fourth place finishes in pole vault (Lily Benanchietti, Francesca Esposito, Rebecca Katsios) and shuttle hurdles (Cianna Winkler, Carolyn Feeley, Dasha Yakhnis, Carli Lavoie), and a sixth place in the 4 x 1600m (Julia DiGeronimo, Karishma Parekh, Karina Squilanti, Adrianna Fierro).

Verona girls also competed in the 4 x 100m (Zoie Petronzo, Colette Quattrocchi, Alex DeVivo, Francesca Valle), the 4 x 200m (Zoie Petronzo, Olivia Fiore, Chelsea Gruskin, Francesca Valle), the sprint medley (Olivia Fiore, Chelsea Gruskin, Francesca Valle, Julia DiGeronimo), the 3 x 400m hurdles (Cianna Winkler, Dasha Yakhnis, Kathleen Nagy) and discus (Isabel Latorre, Gigi Petti, Maddie Leonard). The Verona girls had a team score of 25.

On the boys side, the Hillbillies’ Chris Robinson and Vincent Hogan took second in the 400 hurdles, while the boys took fourth in both the 4 x 800m and 4 x 1600m, with times of 8:58.0 and 20:14.8 respectively, and a sixth place finish in javelin. The boys had a team score of 9.

Both the boys and girls team have a home meet on Wednesday, April 18, against North 13th Street Tech and St. Vincent Academy. The meet starts at 4 p.m. on the track behind H.B. Whitehorne.
