The Mandarin students in Verona’s public schools came together on Friday night for an evening of Chinese culture, music and dance.
There were traditional Chinese songs from the students at Verona High School and and Laning Avenue Elementary School, Chinese rap from students at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School and Forest Avenue Elementary School students performed one of the evening’s two renditions of the Lion Dance that is traditionally performed during the Chinese Lunar New Year. The performances came just ahead of the start of the Year of the Monkey, which began this morning. VHS students Matt Gasin, Billy Gault and Patrick Citrano performed a traditional Chinese fan dance, which they learned while studying in China last summer under a program organized by Rutgers University and the Confucius Institute.
The evening, which was planned by Mandarin teachers Betty Hou, Jenny Qin and Angie Yang and the VHS Mandarin Club, also included a spell-binding Chinese yoyo demonstration, a martial arts presentation by Wushu-kung Fu Fitness Center in East Hanover and several dances by the Berwin Art Education Center in Plainsboro Township.
