Wins, Losses For VHS Spring Sports

Softball-Caldwell-ReedThe up and down season in Verona High School spring sports continues. The girls lacrosse team is leading the spring pack with a 7-2 record. The girls, who were rallying back from a heartbreaking one-point loss to Montclair on Thursday, notched up a 9-5 win over Watchung Hills on Saturday on the strength of Ava Anderson’s scoring. The sophomore had three goals and an assist, while senior Jackie Brozyna had two goals and an assist, and Emilia Frizzi and Dana Pena had a goal and an assist apiece. Verona was up by just one point at the half before going on a scoring blitz in the second. They host Columbia on Monday.

Softball had a narrow defeat against Caldwell to start the week, but ended with a big 13-0 win over West Orange. Freshman Amber Reed was a standout in the Caldwell game, with an out-of-the-park home run. Caroline Chivily had the hot bat against West Orange, firing off a homer and a triple, and driving in six runs. Olivia Feiger, Kaitlyn Deo and Jackie Selby had two hits apiece, while Paige Ferrell and Kate Stanisci split time on the mound and struck out 10 West Orange batters. Softball travels to Sussex Tech on Tuesday.

Baseball started the week with a win over West Orange, but stumbled against both Newark Academy and Caldwell. Mike Cifaretto was 1-for-4 against the Minutemen with a double, and run and two RBI. Hillbilly baseball, which is 7-4 overall, heads to Glen Ridge on Monday.

The boys lacrosse team defeated Lenape Valley 7-5 on Tuesday but fell to Oratory 11-2 on Saturday. Matt DiDia was the high scorer in the Lenape game with five goals, while Brian Wagner had a goal and four assists. The team, which is now 2-7 on the season, faces Nutley on Monday in an away game.
