From the moment that the Verona High School girls lacrosse team stepped onto Centennial Field for their warm up on Monday night, decked out in tie-dyed red-white-and-blue shirts, you knew it was going to be a banner evening for the team.
Playing on their Senior Night, the girls defeated Mount Saint Dominic Academy, a team they had set their sights on beating. Perhaps even better: The 12-9 Verona victory also saw senior Lauren Ednie score her 100th career goal. Last November, the midfield defender and four-year varsity starter for VHS signed to play with Wagner College, an NCAA Division I college on Staten Island. Ednie had two goals and two assists on Monday night. Seniors Gabi Mottola and Lizzie Scandiffio added a goal apiece (Scandiffio will also play for a Division I school in September, Central Connecticut State University.)

And there were signs that Verona’s winning ways will continue after Senior Night was over: Junior Emilia Frizzi scored four goals and assisted on two more, while fellow junior Jackie Brozyna–who netted her 100th goal earlier this season–add three more to her total. Freshman Dana Pena had a goal and an assist, while sophomore goalie Amanda Maguire thwarted 14 MSDA attempts. Verona now has a 12-3 record and faces Bernards High School this afternoon at 4:30 at home. Claire Peck had five of MSDA’s goals, while Maria Bio had three Verona resident Quinn Dunnigan had one.
