The victory almost cost goalie Christian Alfano his voice, but the Verona High School boys soccer team defeated Newark’s Science Park High School at home on Monday.
Verona led in scoring the whole game: The 3-0 Verona first half was a 5-3 Verona victory at the end. Jack Yauch and Matt Braschi had two goals apiece, Ellis Martin had one. Troy Carrington and Paul Chanley were credited with assists. Alfano, who yelled a steady stream of encouragement and warnings to his teammates about Science Park’s alignment on the field, had 16 saves on the afternoon. Jorge Liviapoma and Paulo Pinto scored for Science Park.
The boys soccer team’s record now stands at 4-0 and travels to Caldwell on Wednesday.
It was a different story for the VHS girls soccer team, which played at Bernards High School to a 4-0 loss. Montana Sutton led the scoring for Bernards with three goals.
The girls, who have a 1-3 record, travel to Mount Saint Dominic Academy for a game on Thursday.
