This Thursday is Family Night. The twice-yearly event, promoted by the Verona Municipal Alliance, is a night when Verona families take a break from homework and sports to just spend time as a family. See Thursday’s listing for a link to discount coupons for Verona restaurants.

Monday, October 15: Verona girls tennis won the semifinals of the Group 1 sectionals against Cresskill last Thursday and on Monday, they play Park Ridge in the Group 1 Section State Finals. The matches are at Park Ridge, but they have been moved from 4 p.m. to 1 p.m. because of the threat of rain. Boys soccer is home against East Side at Centennial Field, 4 p.m. start. Volleyball plays MKA at MKA, 4 p.m. Town Council holds its regular meeting, 7 p.m. in the Council chambers in Town Hall.

Tuesday, October 16: Girls soccer takes on Newark Academy at home and the girls tennis team has a home match against West Orange. Both 4 p.m. starts. Town Council workshop on the plans to add two more multipurpose youth sports fields on the Hilltop property behind Centennial Field. The meeting is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. in the Council chambers in Town Hall.

Wednesday,  October 17: Girls tennis takes on Columbia High School at home, 4 p.m. start. The volleyball team hosts Barringer High School for a 5 p.m. game.

Thursday, October 18: Family Night in Verona. There are no after school sports and no homework. Many Verona eateries will be offering discounts on dinner out. Get your coupons here. You can also shake things up a bit with belly dance at Verona Yoga from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Friday, October 19: Girls soccer is away at Mount Saint Dominic, while the boys team travels to Science Park High School in Newark. Girls tennis takes on Caldwell at home; all 4 p.m. starts. The Hillbilly football team plays Cedar Grove in a night game at the rival high school. 7 p.m. start.

Saturday, October 20: Cross country teams compete in Branch Brook Park at 9 a.m. The Witch of the West End will fly to Main St. Cottage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your pets, kids and family to have free pictures taken with her. Treats–no trick–and the raffle of a beautiful large carved pumpkin. Proceeds will go to Verona families in need.  The Verona High School Marching Maroon and White competes in Montville. The band is scheduled to perform at 8:15 p.m.
