For most of us, hurdles are just a metaphor. A term for a challenge that needs a bit of grit and determination to get over, but no actual lifting of legs.
That is not the case with Erin Smythe, this week’s Verona Sports Booster’s Senior Athlete of the Week. She competes in the 3x400M hurdle and shuttle hurdle teams for Verona High School and last Friday lead a strong showing in both at the Essex County Track & Field Relay Championships. Smythe and her cohorts placed fourth and fifth respectively, and then she topped the night with a fabulous 200M split in the 4x200M relay that set a new school record.
As a member of the Verona girls’ track team Smythe has accumulated many accolades at the conference, county and state level during the past three years. Now a team captain, she is regarded as as inspirational leader and teammate.
Smythe also excels in the classroom and is involved in many school activities, including Heroes & Cool kids and the band, where she plays oboe.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
Go Erin!
