If you were wondering why the players of the Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team had smiles on their faces stretching from ear to ear, I can assure you it was not due to the holiday season, but due to their 7-0 win over Livingston in the second game of the holiday tournament.

Verona freshmen Jake Paganelli started the night off right with a goal early in the first period. From there on out, VGR would never let up on their attack of the net. VGR converted seven of their 44 shots with Glen Ridge senior and Co-captain Matt Lander coming up big with a hat trick and an assist. Chris Lapone, a Verona senior and co-captain of the two-school team, also had a goal in the game.

Glen Ridge senior Max Linnett, who had two assists on the night, and junior Michael Lloyd had a goal apiece in the game. Verona sophomore Dylan DeCandia had two assists.

However, no one played as well as Verona senior goaltender Matt Brehne, who stopped all 25 of Livingston’s shots. This was Brehne’s first shutout of the season, and his best game so far in the year.

VGR’s cup game of the holiday tournament will be played Friday night at 8 p.m. at Codey Arena against Seton Hall Prep.
