For some time now, Verona Police have been keeping an eye on suspicious activity in the parking lot at 24 Grove Avenue. On Monday, their watchfulness paid off with a bust that took marijuana valued at more than $6,000 off the streets.
At around 4:30 p.m. Monday, the VPD observed activity around a grey Nissan Altima and a black Chevy truck in the lot. Officers approached the vehicle and smelled pot. They called the Essex County Sheriff’s office for a drug-sniffing dog and, when the dog showed a reaction, applied for a search warrant. They found between a pound and a pound and a half of marijuana in the Nissan.
Verona Police arrested Demetrios Arvanites, age 20, of Chatham, and charged him with possession and sale of marijuana. Bail was set at $50,000. Arvanites was released after posting bail. Neither the driver of the truck nor a female passenger in the Nissan were arrested, but an investigation is pending.
