The 2011 Verona Baseball & Softball League’s Pony League World Series finally got underway Saturday afternoon at Verona High School. It was The Game Room Store Pirates, lead by manager Wayne Masters, against the SJ Carney Roofing As, guided by manager Brian Venner. The Pirates took the lead in the best of 3 series, with a 9-5 victory over the As.

Pitching and defense lead the way for the Pirates. After the As scored 3 in the first, starting pitcher PJ Walshe settled down and blanked the As. Luke Connell finished up for the victory. The Pirates got some stellar defense from Austin Masters at third base and solid catching from Christian Alfano. The Pirates took the lead for good after a couple walks loaded the bases, a fielder’s choice by Joe Eulie tied the game, then a bases-clearing triple by PJ Walshe game them the lead for good.

Mario Catania had two hits for the As, in addition to pitching three strong innings. Chris Bujnowski scored two runs and Justin Cardoz played a solid defense in right field.

Game 2 is Monday night.
