Rain may be good fishing weather, but it apparently wasn’t good weather for a fishing contest for kids.

Essex County has rescheduled its 2011 Fishing Derby in Verona Park to Thursday, May 26. The derby is free and open to children ages 15 and under. To participate, your kids must be accompanied by an adult and bring their own fishing pole, bait, bucket and chair. There will be prizes in various age categories for catching the first fish and the most fish. Registration for the derby begins at the boathouse at 5 p.m., fishing begins at 6 p.m. and the derby will be held rain or shine. The whole thing wraps up around 8 p.m. For more information, please call 973-735-6229.
