Verona High School students will once again exhibit their creative endeavors from this year’s curricular and extracurricular activities on Wednesday, May 25, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Parents, families, friends, and the community are invited to attend the annual event, which will be held in the front lobby, the new gym, and the cafeteria.

The event is sponsored by the VHS chapter of the National Art Honor Society and honor society officers Ryan Denora, Jasmin Pena, Mette Kolind and Becky Gannon will co-chair the evening’s activities. Art students Joseph Fierro, Hannah Dayan and Sydney White are designing the displays. All VHS art and graphics students will participate by exhibiting their artwork, helping with workshops, and by setting up the displays and decorations for the evening. Terry Sherman, the art teacher, is the faculty adviser for the event.

All of the displays will be set up in the new gym. The evening will feature creative projects made in numerous departments at VHS: art and graphics; woodworking and CAD; English literature; world languages; history, business and marketing; mathematics, science and technology.

The theme of this year’s festival is the natural environment. The art exhibition features many drawings of trees, animals and landscape paintings. Mosaics are also featured in the exhibition. This year, art students were given the option of creating a circular glass mosaic bistro table, and their work will be on display as well. The glass used in the mosaics was donated by S.A. Bendheim, a wholesale glass distributor in Passaic. Anthony Nicosia, a father of two VHS graduates, arranged this generous donation. Mirror and colored glass was also donated by Clinton Glass of Verona, N.J.

Art students will be demonstrating face and hand-decoration. Fused glass necklaces and earrings made in the art room, will be sold as a fund raiser for the Verona Chapter of the National Art Honor Society. The proceeds from both these sales will go towards framing Carly Maestas’ landscape painting for our VHS front foyer gallery. Maestas is a senior at VHS who received a first-place ribbon for her painting at Caldwell College’s Teen Arts Jam this past March.

The evening will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the front lobby with instrumental and vocal performances by VHS students and VHS student Daniel Li will be playing the piano in the new gym throughout the evening. At 8:15 p.m. in the cafeteria, the VHS Spotlight Players, under Dana Ahmuty’s guidance, will perform student-directed one-act plays.

Cold drinks and snacks may be purchased from the DECA Store of VHS. It is located near the entrance of the cafeteria.

The invitation and poster for the Creative Arts Festival was designed by art/graphics students Juliet Carvajal and Gopi Patolia under the guidance of Helene McKelvey-McLaughlin. The VHS SCA helped make this evening possible through its generous donation to the Creative Arts Festival fund.
