The Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team started off the 2010 Codey Arena Winter Classic Holiday Hockey Tournament strong with a 4-1 win over West Morris Central and a 7-1 win over Robbinsville.

However, in their final game, the team suffered a 13-5 loss to Mountain Lakes, a team they had tied the week before. After two high scoring games, this came as a tragic loss. It was VGR’s first loss of the season.

Not only did Mountain Lakes dominate the scoreboard, they dominated the shot count with 35 shots, while VGR had 29. Jeff Celniker, who scored seven goals in the previous game against VGR, had three this game. Four different members of Mountain Lakes team scored two goals apiece.

VGR’s five goals came from the Glen Ridge side of the team. Junior Matt Lander had two, and seniors Spencer Cohen, Alekos Polis, and Nick Martell each had one.

For the entire Holiday Tournament, VGR narrowly outscored their opponents 16-15, and came close to winning the whole tournament.

VGR now sits at 8-1-2, with their next game on Wednesday, January 5, against Morris Knolls, which is ranked sixth in the state. The game, which will be played at the Codey Arena, starts at 4 p.m.
