Greg Schiffenhaus scores

It was a battle of the undefeated, and who came out on top but the Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team. VGR beat West Morris Central 4-1 Tuesday night in the 2010 Codey Arena Winter Classic Holiday Hockey Tournament to acquire their seventh win of the season.

VGR was the first to score and never looked back. Co-captain Alekos Polis of Glen Ridge scored the first two goals of the night. His second goal was shorthanded: West Morris was on a 5-on-3 power play because of two interference calls on VGR. Senior and Co-captain Greg Schiffenhaus of Verona tacked on an insurance goal in the third to increase the lead by three.

The VGR goaltender, Matt Brehne, stopped 32 of West Morris’s 33 shots. Ryan Creamer was the only player to hit the back of the net for West Morris. VGR had a total of 22 shots, and Nick Martell of Glen Ridge also had a goal in the third period.

Matt Lander and Spencer Cohen of Glen Ridge each had a assist on the night. Freshman Dylan DeCandia of Verona was out on the ice again and assisted the Martell goal.

Fred Goode captured some of the action.
