Not Kindergarten Ready? Here’s An Option

As I mentioned in a story last week, the final Verona public school kindergarten workshops were held this past Saturday. Over the next two weeks, the kindergarten screening process will begin and classes for the 2010-2011 school year will be set.

For many of us, this is an exciting time just for the break in paying for day care or preschool. It’s also an opportunity to meet other families in our neighborhoods, which happens to make being at the pool a much more exciting experience. However, with birthday cutoffs being what they are, and different preschool experiences being what they are, you may be concerned about your child’s readiness for kindergarten in the fall. Don’t panic, there is another option.

Verona resident Sharon Newkirk will serve as lead teacher of the new Pre-K 5 class at Rainbow Child Care Center & Preschool in Roseland beginning September 2010. Newkirk was an assistant teacher then a co-teacher at The Children’s House Montessori Preschool in Verona for three years and holds a New Jersey teaching certificate for preschool through 8th grade.

According to Mary Collito, director of Rainbow, “the Pre-K 5 class is in place for children who may have missed the kindergarten cut-off date, as well as for those who are in need of one more year of an academic preschool class, yet not quite ready for kindergarten.” The new Pre-K 5 class offers the same flexible schedule as Rainbow’s traditional programs, including full and part-time care with meals and enrichment classes included in the tuition.
