Verona sports results have been as jumbled as the weather so far this week.

In the plus column, the Boys’ Tennis team bested Cedar Grove 5-zip on Monday. Junior Paul Corrente defeated Jake Perazzone 6-1, 6-3 in first singles. Mike Streifer won his second singles matches over Jonathan Chan 6-0, 6-2. In third singles, Noah Herman beat Chuck Cakirgil 6-0, 6-0. The doubles matches switched things up a bit, with senior Will Schenkel and sophomore Matt Tuorto beating their opponents 6-2, 6-2 in first doubles, while senior Mack Kirby and sophomore Brian Farrell put up 6-1, 6-3 scores. The Verona Tennis team is 14-4 on the season.

Hillbilly Baseball edged past Newark Academy 13-12 on Monday and followed the next day with a 3-0 win over Montclair Kimberley Academy.

But the softball and lacrosse teams have started the week with losses. The softball team was bested 8-1 by West Orange on Monday, and the Girls’ Lacrosse team fell 21-13 to Columbia. On Tuesday, the Boys’ Lacrosse team was handed an 8-4 loss by Bernards. The Verona Golf team was edged out by Glen Ridge by a score of 224 to 235.

Boys’ Lacrosse Coach Marc Brien was philosophical about the loss. “We’re young,” he said. “We came into the season with one senior and lost two starting attackmen; we lost the starting goalie and had a lot of injuries along the way.  When you put that all together, we have been fighting it all year. But the kids come to work and we have been in every game. Even a game like this, 8-4, we were in the game and there was never a period where we saw that we were out of our league.”
