The Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team dealt a strong 6-3 defeat to Livingston on Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the McInnis Cup, after nearly losing its advantage at the start of the third period.
The Verona-Glen Ridge team dominated the first two periods of the game at the Richard J. Codey Arena, which was the team’s first step in the state hockey playoffs. But Livingston rallied at the start of the third period, putting up three goals in close succession despite the best efforts of Matt Brehne, the Verona sophomore goalie who had 10 saves on the evening. But it soon became the Verona-Glen Ridge team’s turn to rally, and they did, advancing their team to a playoff against Nutley on Monday.
Alekos Polis, the junior forward from Glen Ridge, scored the first and final goals of the evening, and sophomore teammate Matt Lander also had bookends with the second and fifth goals. Nick Martell, also from the Glen Ridge side of the team, kicked off the third period rally. The lone scorer from the Verona side of the team was freshman Robert Maguire. His goal is below; several other videos are on MyVeronaNJ’s YouTube site. We’ll also be expanding the hockey album on our Facebook page.
