Verona High School’s boys and girls basketball teams both played Montclair High School on Tuesday, but only one came away with a win. The girls got a 43-33 win, while the boys game ended in a 57-45 loss.
The boys game started out as a close contest, with Verona matching Montclair shot for shot both in and out of the paint. At the half, Montclair was up by just one point, 23-22. But the Mounties pulled away in the second half, out-scoring Verona 18-12 in the third quarter and 16-10 in the fourth.
Gianluca Checchetto was the top scorer for Verona with 15 points, followed by Charles Giacomazza with 10. The Verona boys are now 6-12 on the season and 0-9 in the Super Essex Conference’s Colonial division.
The boys will be back in action against University High School in Newark on Thursday at 4 p.m. The girls, who now have a 12-4 record, will host Newark Tech on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
