To the Editor:

As the readers of MyVeronaNJ are well aware, balloting by mail in Verona’s Township Council election has already begun, while those who choose to vote in person will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 9.

Three people are vying for a pair of seats that have terms expiring on June 30. Among them is two-term Council member (and Verona’s current mayor) Alex Roman.

Though all three candidates are worthy of consideration, it is Alex Roman who ranks topmost in my estimation.

Alex was first elected to the Council in 2015, and over the past eight years he has had a very positive impact on the governance of our town. In this regard, it should be noted that Alex was making his—and our—voice heard even before he joined the Council in July 2015. For years preceding that, he attended nearly every Council meeting, and at many of them he offered the benefit of his financial and technological expertise to suggest common-sense ways to save taxpayers money while simultaneously enhancing the quality of municipal services.

He has continued to pursue these twin goals throughout his Council tenure. Equally important, and most visibly during the past two years as mayor, he has stood staunchly behind his longtime priority of providing what he describes as “an open and welcoming atmosphere for the public to participate” in the Council’s decision-making process.

Alex is an attentive listener. Whether engaged in discussion with colleagues on the Council and the various boards and committees on which he serves, or hearing from other residents and business owners, he considers carefully what is being said and responds thoughtfully. This core trait is an essential part of who Alex is–as it should be with anyone who holds, or hopes to hold, public office.

A person of principle, Alex shares the priorities of residents throughout Verona, and he continually demonstrates his ability to translate those priorities into meaningful achievements.

Alex believes that community-wide goals are best attained through community-wide effort. Indeed, this belief forms the foundation of his campaign slogan: “Collaborative Leadership for Verona”. We can all play a role in that effort by voting for Alex Roman. (3A on the ballot).
