The Verona Environmental Commission will be holding a cleanup of the Peckman River nature trail on Saturday, June 5, and it could use a few more volunteers. The trail is located F.N. Brown elementary school and the cleanup will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
The VEC will provide gloves and garbage bags. It is encouraging volunteers to wear face masks and observe social distancing, and to wear long pants and work boots. If you intend to go into the Peckman to retrieve debris, it is also a good idea to wear waders or rain boots.
The Peckman River flows through Verona, Cedar Grove and Little Falls before joining up with the Passaic River in the Woodland Park. The river and the adjacent trail have often been dumping grounds for materials that threaten fish and wildlife and impede its flow. Increase flooding has also washed debris into the river.
There are two 75-minute cleanup slots and the VEC would like volunteers to choose one on this registration page and complete the liability waiver. You can register multiple family members for a slot. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
