Signing Day 2020: (top, l-r) Pierce Coppola, Kyle McCaffrey, Zach Bucher, (botton, l-r) Jack Lonsinger, Trevor Spinelli

Verona High School’s athletics department took a moment yesterday to celebrate the five seniors who will be continuing their sports careers in college.

Pierce Coppola is heading to the mound at the University of Florida. The lefty had committed to the University of Virginia in 2019, but decommitted from that school in early September 14 and announced that he will be pitching for the NCAA Division I Gators instead.

The Verona Hillbillies baseball team also has a DI commitment in pitcher Kyle McCaffrey, who is heading to the University at Albany. In his last full season on the mound in 2019, McCaffrey posted a 1.38 ERA over 39 innings pitched and had 39 strikeouts.

Three VHS boys lacrosse players also signed their commitments on Tuesday. Zach Bucher is headed to Connecticut College, which has a Division III men’s program. The long stick midfielder also played football for Verona.

Jack Lonsinger will be bringing his high-scoring play to the Bryant University Bulldogs, a DI program. Lonsinger hit 100 goals before the end of his sophomore season for Verona.

Trevor Spinelli committed to Drew University, a DIII lacrosse school. Spinelli has played lacrosse in summer, fall and winter club teams and also was part of VHS’s winter track team.
