The Verona High School girls lacrosse program will be holding a virtual race challenge to raise money for a scholarship in honor of Coach Julie Nippes, who passed away in August. It’s called “27 for 27” because Coach Nippes wore number 27 when she played lacrosse.

Nippes’ obituary noted that, “Julie was a gifted athlete, a fierce competitor and a caring coach. She cared for people and got involved. She was passionate, kind and funny. You could always find Julie at one of the kids’ games, either cheering loudly or holding a clipboard with detailed drills that took her hours to look up. She was an unofficial nurse, always on the ready with a bandaid, a loose diagnosis or some encouraging words. Julie loved lacrosse and traditions old and new.” For this reason the lacrosse team wants to run this challenge in her honor.

The goal for this challenge is 27 miles, and you will have 27 days to complete it. In this virtual challenge, you can add miles you complete from running, walking or even biking, and since this is a virtual challenge, you can complete it at any location. You can change the location each time you begin. Run from your home, find a trail, a mountain, wherever you like.

“27 for 27” is sponsored by Golden Eagle Races, which is a newly formed small business, owned and operated by Verona resident Joseph Gagnon, who is currently in the military. Golden Eagle Races will be donating a portion of the race proceeds directly back to the Verona High School Lacrosse Parents Association.

The race sign-up is here.
