Girls Cross Country Takes Second In Championship

The Verona High School girls cross-country team came in second at the Super Essex Conference American Division Championship in Branch Brook Park on Wednesday.

“This was an incredible performance in a division that includes the county’s larger schools such as Montclair, Columbia, Millburn, West Orange, Bloomfield, Nutley, and West Essex, along with MKA and Newark Academy,” said Coach Gene Leporati.

Jenika Ying led Verona’s efforts, running the course in 21:28, with Julia DiGeronimo and Bridget
O’Donnell close behind in 21:49 and 21:58 respectively. Annalie Ying, a freshman, finished in 22:22, with Veronica Valera tight on her heels in 22:23. ”

“Our total team time of 22:00 minutes”, Leporati added, “is one of the best in school history.”

The VHS boys cross country team also competed in the championship. David Navarro was the top finisher for the boys team, placing in the top 20 with a time of 17:51.
