On Monday September 11, the Verona High School boys soccer team faced off against a fast-paced, scrappy Columbia High School team in Maplewood. Columbia outscored the Hillbillies 1-0, with the only goal coming in the 17th minute on a beautifully executed play from Columbia. The ball was crossed into the corner by a Columbia defender and controlled by a midfielder who then dribbled across the end line and fed a wide open Cougar who placed it in the back of the net.

Columbia may have won the game but Verona was certainly not overmatched. The Hillbillies got plenty of chances to tie the score, but they just could not find the back of the net.

On Wednesday, Verona traveled to Montclair High School to face the Group 4 power. The Hillbillies lost 4-1 in what was hard-fought match. Sal Vassallo scored the lone Verona goal on a penalty kick.

Verona’s next match will not be until Tuesday September 19 at Newark Academy. The game will be played at 4 p.m.
