The Verona Lions Club has picked the winners for its annual “Super 50/50 Raffle”. Steve Janett, president of the Verona Lions announced the winners during the Clubs Annual Holiday Party at the Valley Regency in Clifton on December 12. The first prize winner of $5,000 was Matthew Grimes of Union City, formally of Verona. The second prize winner of $1,000 was Carlos Aquirro of Verona.
The raffle sold 1,200 tickets at $10 each. All funds collected by the Lions go back to Verona. The funds raised support the Verona Lions’ charitable activities throughout the township, including:
- Donation of a car used as Verona Medical Transportation Vehicle, in which members from the Lions Club volunteer to drive each year.
- Donations annually in ShopRite gift cards to Verona residents in need during the holidays.
- $3,000 donated yearly to Verona High School seniors in recognition of their community service achievements.
- Donations to the Verona Public Library to enhance the large print book collection. (The club is currently committed to doubling that donation.)
Last year, the Lions donated more than $13,000 to local charities and causes, including over a dozen sight and diabetes-related charities and youth causes.
