Verona High School sports teams put three more games in the win column, including one towards a tournament title.
The VHS boys lacrosse team posted a solid 12-1 defeat of Newark East Side. Brian Wagner, a junior, ruled Centennial Field as he tallied up four goals and one assist. Jack Farrell scored three goals, while fellow freshman Doug Spardel and Matt Thompson, who led the high-scoring win over Union City last week, each had two goals. Mike Stanisci had one. Sophomore Scott Rust was in goal, and boosted his career saves to 53.
The VHS girls lacrosse team, meanwhile, advanced in Essex County tournament play with a 17-14 defeat of Caldwell. The quarterfinals victory saw Jackie Brozyna nailing six goals and two assists, while Lauren Ednie scored four goals. The lady Hillbillies once again showed strength across their ranks with Emilia Frizzi, Lizzi Scandiffio, Gabi Mottola and Dana Pena rounding out the scoring. Sophomore Amanda Maguire was in goal, where she foiled 22 scoring attempts by Caldwell.
The tournament semifinals will take place on May 3, with Verona playing at West Essex. Glen Ridge, which defeated Mount Saint Dominic Academy 21-9 in its quarterfinals goes up against undefeated Montclair High School. The tournament final is slated for May 10 at Verona.
In softball, VHS handily defeated Paterson Charter, 12-2. The five-inning game at F.N. Brown field saw one double from sophomore Jackie Selby and two from freshman Kaitlyn Deo, who both finished 3-for-3 on the day. Caitlin Barnes, Sam Bass and Olivia Feiger each had RBIs, while Caroline Chivily added two hits and two runs and Meghan Yeates got across the plate three times. The win pushed Verona’s record to 6-5.
