Julia Ashley wrapped up a wonderful track season by getting third place at the Meet of Champions in the 800m with an incredible time of 2.10.8. Verona girls track coach Gene Leporati believes that Ashley is the first Verona girl to place in a running event at the Meet of Champions, which was held Wednesday at Jost Field in South Plainfield.

Five VHS girls qualified for the Meet of Champions this year, after a strong performance at the state Group Track & Field Championships at Egg Harbor Township High School this past weekend. They are, pictured below from left to right, Kelsey Attamante, Melanie Egan, Marybeth Grund, Sarah Conboy and Julia Ashley.

At states, Ashley took second place in the 400m with a time of 55.9, and captured first in the 800m with a time of 2.13.8, a VHS record. She also anchored the 4 x 800m team there, which set both a new meet and school record.
