It was the battle of the Oranges yesterday in the preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament, and there was a win and a loss for Verona.
The VHS boys basketball team played Orange High School in Orange and came away with a major 48-39 win. Verona had gone into the game as the underdog, seeded 22 to Orange’s number 11 rank. But junior Alex Kaslander dominated the game, with a 20-point day that left everybody else in the dust. Fellow junior Luke Weiss led the team in rebounds with six, and contributed eight points to the win. Mike Coppola, had seven points and Frank Ferrari had six.

The VHS girls’ tournament play took them to West Orange, where Amanda Langan turned over the 1,000-point spotlight to Chisom Amaefuna of the lady Mountaineers. Amaefuna hit her career points milestone in the third quarter and led her team to a 52-22 victory. Langan had just nine points.
The boys take on Immaculate Conception High School in an away game in Montclair tomorrow. It’s a 1 p.m. start. UPDATE: The boys play Montclair High School tomorrow in Montclair, 2 p.m. start. The girls play Immaculate at home on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
