A strong Barringer High School wrestling team came to Verona High School yesterday and came away a 48-27 victory. But even the disappointing results held some strong matches for Verona.
Joe Ballantyne, wrestling at 113, went nearly five minutes against Juan Marcos Garcia before claiming the match with a pin. All six of Ballantyne’s wins this season have been by pin.
Paul Scully, wrestling at 126, took on Nelson Mendez and came away with a 16-10 decision. Scully, a junior, has just one loss this season.
Benemi Bryant barely had time to recover from his opening handshake with Chris Virgadamo before Virgadamo nailed him to the mat. The VHS sophomore has eight wins to his credit this year.
Joe Cordasco and Frank Greco were once again standouts for Verona. Cordasco stepped out against Juan Santiago, who has four fast pins to his record this season. But yesterday, it was Santiago who got pinned, in just over two minutes. Cordasco, a senior and four-year starter, is undefeated this year.
The final Verona victory of the evening was from Greco, who took on Kyle Cato, who also had seen his share of pins for Barringer. But Cato saw the gym lights in 1:34. This week, Greco was ranked eighth in the state by the Star Ledger at 182 pounds.
The Hillbilly grapplers are away at Cedar Grove on Friday night, with a 7 p.m. start.
