From July 2010 to the middle of last year, MyVeronaNJ.com tortured entertained you with 52 weeks of photos of Verona that probably helped you to see your town a little bit differently. We took you to places you knew well, like Towne Scoop, and others that were much further from your daily consciousness, like the water tower at the Hilltop.
And then, after generating more than 32,000 pageviews, Fred Goode, the photographer responsible for all this madness, decided to take a break.
Sort of. Since last July, Fred’s been scouting locations for a new Where In Verona contest, and we’ve got the first of the new shots for you here. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are back–with two changes. This year, Where In Verona is going to be a monthly contest for the most part. Look for it on the first Monday of the month in its usual home page spot.
The second change concerns the prizes. If you won a MyVeronaNJ.com baseball cap in the past, congratulations–you now have a collector’s item. This year, the winners will get a “I (heart) MyVeronaNJ.com t-shirt printed up by Jimmy and Tracey Hill’s newest venture, Hill Publishing. The shirt was designed by Michelle Posner and reflects what we know about MyVeronaNJ.com’s readers: You really, really, really like us.
If you’re a Where In Verona veteran, you know the drill. If you’re a newbie to the contest, you’ve got to put your best guess about the photos you’ll see in the Comments field below, along with your real name and real e-mail address. (Don’t worry, we won’t show your e-mail address to the world or sell it to spammers.) Every so often during the week we will add more photos to the contest in progress, so be sure to bookmark this page and check back often.
UPDATE: Kathleen Seubert won it on the sixth photo, by guessing Tortilla Sunrise. With an assist from Beth Shorten. Here are all the photos:
[nggallery id=179]
So you don’t want me to find this huh??? ;-) I have a guess and it’s probably wrong, but I’m going with it any way because I really want a cool t-shirt.
Is it Trend?
If I’m right it’ll be a happy 2012.
If I’m wrong, I’m proud to be the first wrong answer of the new year!
Beth, I was using my best maternal reverse psychology. You know, when you tell the kids “don’t” in the hopes they’ll do the opposite?
And you can be proud to claim the title of the First Wrong Answer of 2012!
Well that’s no help at all, but I’ll take another stab at it…Is it the AT&T Store on Bloomfield?
Beth, remember that Fred’s purpose with these clues is to not help but to keep you guessing. Which is what you will have to do.
Ok…so let’s go for # three (doesn’t anyone else want to play along?)…how about PostNet
And Beth has won … the wrong answer trifecta!
Beth, we ARE going to play but remember that this has to last the month. There is no way that Virginia is going to post one of Fred’s pictures this early that will allow us to guess correctly so might as well sit back and wait for some more clues. Oh, and also to enjoy Fred’s fine photography work while waiting. However, if I WAS going to guess, I would of course take into consideration that most modern phones have the Q on number 7 and Z on number 9, not on number 1 as in this picture.
Wow. Jeff’s right about the phone number/letter thing.
He’s also right about the fact that we’re not going to make this easy. Well, at least we’re going to try. Remember, we’ve had some pretty amazing guesses on some pretty obscure clues in the past.
I think it is a picture of a TV screen and a remote so I am going to guess O’Neils.
These thought processes are all very interesting. But that doesn’t make them right. See you all tomorrow.
It is tomorrow…where are you?
Unfortunately, this is one of the jobs on the site that I can’t automate. So if, when the alarm clock goes off, I hit the snooze button, I don’t make my 6 a.m. new photo deadline.
Patience grasshopper.
And photo number 3 just totally gives it away! LOL
Question: Since it is a new contest are all the places “new” or are we bringing back some favorites from 2011?
Well its a cc terminal and a kitchen sprayer. im assuming this is something new and not seen before. so i will go with Tias or the Chinese place next to us that’s taking forever to open.
Maria: No and no
Kathleen: You know the rules by now. You guess and I say Yes or No. Or something reasonably polite.
Say something nice while I guess again…Since these photos are telling me NOTHING, I’m just randomly guessing…and since I’m thinking about food, I’ll say: Hobcaw
OK, I’ll say something nice: I love the pulled pork sandwich at Hobcaw. Actually I love just about everything that Nancy and James and all the lovely folks at Hobcaw put on a plate.
But that’s not where Fred is this week.
Well maybe that’s where he SHOULD be…
I will try to follow the rules….Are the 2012 pictures, presented in this month’s contest and that will be presented in future contests, images of places that have already been photographed and presented as part of the 2011 contest?
Your humble participant,
Kathleen
This is like the scene in “2001: A Space Odyssey” when HAL says, “I’m sorry Dave, I can’t do that.”
Let me join the fray and guess Carnivalle Firestone
It’s not a fray. We’re speaking civilly. Kathleen hasn’t used her “mean mommy” voice once.
But it’s also not Carnivale’s.
Well the 4th photo really helps too! ;) Rock Tec? (Fred is certainly being hard on us in 2012)
I mean it CAN”T be O’Neils because the poster is spelled incorrectly!
O’Neil’s probably wins the prize for the most frequently misspelled business name in town. Maybe because we all had that rule drilled into us that it’s “I before E except after C” and there’s no C around.
At any rate, it’s not O’Neil’s and it’s not Rocktec, which does have a C. Two, in fact.
And as for Fred, he has a strict no-whining policy.
I’m not whining… ;-) (And I’m not winning either).
How about Lakeside Deli/7 Hills Catering?
The name is Eight Hills, but we don’t take points off for math.
The photo, however, is not Eight Hills. Or Lakeside Deli.
Hill Publishing
Ha! Tracey will get a kick out of that guess.
But that’s not where we are.
Just for fun (and to round things out), how about Fred Hill Sports Academy? ;-p
No, and you haven’t guessed all the Hill-affiliated businesses in town.
So are you saying it’s Dekko?
I’m not saying anything. But I am impressed at your knowledge of ties in the business community.
Now, are you making a guess?
I’m guessing that I need another photo to make another guess. I’ll be back tomorrow morning!
How about Bella Gente?
Because I have waited patiently for Beth to sign back on and guess I am stealing Beth’s hint/guess – is it Dekko? If it is right – Beth gets the shirt.
Yikes, what a pile on. Three of you in about 20 minutes.
In reverse order: Kathleen, no; Jeff (welcome back), no; Beth, good night.
Darn that last photo looks familiar, but I can’t place it…I want to say Tortilla Sunrise, but I think that’s wrong.
Let me know when you’ve had your coffee and made up your mind.
The new Foot Spa
Have you been there? Tracy and Linette went and said it was wonderful.
That’s not where we are this week, BTW.
Having my coffee and still stumped, but I’m going to make a guess of Canine Designs and say that Fred needs to be a bit nicer in 2012…these are really hard! ;-)
A don’t know if it was specifically your guess that started my dog howling, but no.
And I will pass along your sentiments to Fred.
Keeping the human spa theme alive – Jazz Nails.
You know, that whole “stayin’ alive” thing really only worked for the BeeGees. And even then, not so well.
Not Jazz Nails.
Kathleen, I’ll raise you one spa and see if I get a t-shirt. How about Paradiso Hair and Nail?
Spa? We’re giving away spa time now?
Actually that’s not just a bad idea for future contests.
However, guessing a spa is a very bad idea for this contest. Not Paradiso.
Community Center? (I need to be more centered…this whole thing is confusing me!)
Verona Farmers – the produce store next to Subway and Krausers on Bloomfield Avenue
Kitchen – Danny O’Callaghan Youth Center
Updated guess – tortilla sunrise
Beth: yes, center yourself. No, not community center
Jeff: No, not the greengrocer
Kathleen: Interesting, but wrong
Tortilla Sunrise
Hey, guess what? MyVeronaNJ.com has been in a meeting all day brainstorming lots of new ideas for the site.
So Fred just gave us time for a break and I saw this comment.
And guess what? You are the winner of the first I Love MyVeronaNJ.com T-shirt! Though maybe you want to give it to Beth since she mulled publicly about whether Tortilla Sunrise was the right idea.
I totally missed Beth’s tortilla sunrise guess. Yes – she said it first so she should get t-shirt. I did not figure it out until I saw the LAX sponsor picture.
Kathleen
We’ll be generous. Shirts for both of you! I’ll be unlocking all the rest of the photos in a minute.
