Anybody who’s been through high school knows that freshmen and seniors don’t always see eye to eye. But they did Saturday on a gridiron in Newark, as the Hillbillies’ freshman quarterback Frank Ferrari connected with senior Billy Meade to bring home another victory for Verona.
Their first touchdown combo in the game against Central High School came in the first quarter: Ferrari drilled one to Meade, who took the ball 41 yards into the end zone. They connected again in the second and, this time, Meade took a 75-yard run. Meade piled on the mileage in the third quarter, when he went 83 yards to nail his third touchdown. Frank Greco, a junior running who has been a strong presence all season for Verona, once again showed his strength, taking a second-quarter kickoff return 65 yards to slam down Verona’s 27-18 victory.
Devon Lewis, Joshua Betts and Jayquan Brown did the scoring for Central High school. But Central’s fourth attempt at a TD was shut down solid on the four yard line by the Hillbilly defense.
Ferrari, who has been gaining confidence in each game, had 161 passing yards on the day, bring his three-game total to 302 yards. Pass completions? 66.7% yesterday, thank you very much, for 60.7% on the season. Meade’s four receptions racked up 131 yards Saturday, his best game tally so far. And take a good look at how far Meade was off the ground in Bob Thomas’ photo below. We may have to start calling him Air Meade.
Verona now stands at 4-3-0 on the season The Hillbillies take on another Newark team, Weequahic High School, next Saturday at 1 p.m. at home.
