We heard some grumbling two weeks ago when it was announced that Verona was only number 53 on New Jersey Monthly magazine’s top high schools list. Then we heard that a high school in our county that is higher on the list will face much larger classes in the fall because parents apparently rented apartments there in droves to get their kids enrolled.
Now this. Gov. Chris Christie has signed into law a bill (A-355) that will let parents who don’t like their home district to send their kids out of district. And because of New Jersey’s antediluvian school finance system, taxpayers might have to pay for it. Under the law, up to 10% of the students in a district could transfer to another, provided the receiving district is not at capacity. If the new school is less than 20 miles away, the sending school district has to pay for transportation. The full story is in The Star Ledger and you can read it here.
I feel what that students that move out of the district should be able to stay at the school they have known for years, but one stipulation is that the parents provide the transportation.
