Madonna is back. Last night, we popped by the VHS auditorium for a preview of this weekend’s spring musical “Back to the 80s” and there she was, belting out “Material Girl” in a rich alto and flirting with her boy toys. Her hair was darker and she looked younger…come to think of it, the singer actually looked a lot like VHS freshman Gabi Latimer. (If you don’t believe me, check out the video, below.)
Forgive my nostalgia. Watching “Back to the 80s” is like entering a time warp for those of us who came of age in that decade of big hair and leg warmers. The show’s toe-tapping tunes include “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Footloose,” “Centerfold,” “Wake Me Up Before You Go, Go,” and “Let’s Hear It For The Boys,” with live music provided by a pit orchestra of talented VHS musicians. The show is directed and choreographed by Danielle Jacobs and produced by drama teacher Dana Ahmuty. Marsha Schreier leads the show’s orchestra.
Opening night is tomorrow, Thursday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m., in the VHS auditorium. Shows on Friday and Saturday are also at 7:30. Admission is $12 for adults; $8 for students and seniors.
Here’s Gabi Latimer’s rendition of “Material Girl”. And check out MyVeronaNJ’s YouTube site for a duet by the talented Daisy Bourne and Kim Castellanos.
