Starbucks Seeks To Open Verona Store

Take this to the bank: Starbucks is looking to open a store in the former Chase branch at the corner of Claremont and Pompton Avenues.

The coffeehouse chain had tried to go through the Verona Planning board in May, but its application was re-directed to the Board of Adjustment. It was supposed to have had a hearing there on June 13. The zoning board’s docket proved to be too crowded that night, so Starbucks’ team will make their case at the July meeting.

Under its proposed plan for the site at 30 Pompton Avenue, Starbucks would re-purpose the existing bank building, with a few modifications. Notably, it would eliminate the drive-through window, because those are not permitted for food businesses in Verona, and the facade would be re-branded with Starbucks’s name and logo. The company is also looking to put up a 25-foot-high sign, though Verona zoning officials have shot down large sign requests at other businesses in the past.

EVI Realty, which owns the land under the former bank and several other lots along the west side of Pompton, is also paying to install a traffic light at the intersection of Pompton and Claremont.

No word on how fast the Starbucks could open after it gets zoning approval. You can see a drawing of the proposed interior here.
