Verona’s former chief of police, Doug Huber, will be the grand marshal of this year’s Memorial Day parade.

Huber is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. When he returned to the U.S., he worked as a teacher before becoming an officer with the Verona Police Department. He rose to the rank of chief and also served at times as Verona’s township manager.

The Memorial Day parade will step off at 10 a.m. from Everett Field and proceed west on Bloomfield Avenue to Town Hall, where a ceremony will be held.

Memorial Day is a solemn federal holiday to honor those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The names of Verona residents who died in World War I are on the Doughboy statue in front of Town Hall, while those who died in World War II are on the granite monument closer to H.B. Whitehorne Middle School. Those who died in Vietnam are on a plaque inside Town Hall. No Veronans died in the Korean conflict. The names of the dead will be read during the Memorial Day ceremony and Verona Scouts will put flags on the monuments. The dead are:
