Michael Kevin O’Connor, MD, Former Resident

Michael Kevin O’Connor was born February 11, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York and died June 3,2024 in Vero Beach, Florida. He was the first-born son of Mary (née Kearney) and Frank D. O’Connor.

He was called Kevin from early childhood. He graduated from St. Bartholomew Elementary School, Brooklyn Preparatory School in 1960 and The College of the Holy Cross in 1964.

Kevin received his MD degree from New York Medical College in 1968. This was followed by two years of internship/residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City. He joined the U.S. Army in 1970 where he served for two years, rising to the rank of major as a flight surgeon.

He completed his residency in internal medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and then completed a second residency in psychiatry. He was invited to join the staff in the Psychiatry Department and served with distinction for 31 years.

After his retirement from Mayo, he moved to New Jersey and joined the staff of University Hospital in Newark. He had a series of part-time positions after retiring from there. These included consultations at Kessler Rehabilitation Hospital in West Orange, a private practice and treating HIV patients at NJCRI in Newark. He retired from medical practice in 2017 and moved part time to Sea Oaks in Vero Beach.

Kevin was always involved in parish affairs in the Catholic church wherever he resided.

He was active in many medical organizations in addition to his teaching and patient care. He was a gifted and compassionate clinician and an esteemed teacher and researcher. He volunteered at Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti several times.

Kevin had a full life outside of his professional duties. He was an award-winning photographer, recreational sailor, jazz aficionado, voracious reader, and gardener. He was a kind, generous, loyal, honest and humble man. He was a deep thinker with a strong faith though not without doubts. He also possessed a great wit and sense of humor. He loved playing basketball and tennis. However, his favorite activity was being with his beloved family and friends.

Kevin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara (née King) and four children and their spouses, James and Sudawan O’Connor, Timothy O’Connor and Sara Bernstein, Maggie O’Connor and Sophoclis Alexopoulos, Nora O’Connor and Murat Uyaroglu. He was blessed with seven grandchildren: Kiera, Devin, Amelia, Teo, Leo, Polly and Lucy. Two brothers also survive him, Thomas O’Connor and Terrence O’Connor.

The funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 28 Lakeside Ave, Verona, on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 10 a.m. Parking and the church entrance can be found in the Montrose Avenue parking lot and entrance located at 33 Montrose Avenue, Verona.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Mayo Clinic, Doctors Without Borders or The Sierra Club.
