Travel Baseball Teams Participate In Cancer Walk

Players from the 10U and 9U travel baseball teams and their families participate in this morning’s Valerie Fund run/walk in Verona Park. The Valerie Fund is a Maplewood-based nonprofit that helps children battling cancer to be treated close to home.

The young baseball players raised more than $1,200, which they donated to Team Trey. That team is supporting a five-year-old in Cedar Grove who is battling cancer.

“As coaches and board members, we need to educate our kids about being committed to the community they represent,” said Gil Cruz, a Verona Baseball Softball League Board member. “I was able to get 20-plus travel baseball families involved and I hope to grow that every year.”

“As always, we had the support of Deputy Mayor McGrath and Councilwoman Holland,” he added. House of Bagels donated bagels and drinks for the participating players and their families before the walk and everyone gathered at Chris’ Red Hots, a hot dog business that is opening soon at the intersection of Claremont and Bloomfield avenues.
