Quick reminder: The deadline for applying for one of six $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors from the Verona Chapter of UNICO is next Wednesday, May 3.
Most UNICO scholarships require an applicant to be of Italian descent, but that criteria is not required for the Labor Day 5K Race Scholarship. Another of the scholarships is aimed at students looking to pursue a career in the trades such as plumbing, electric, and construction. UNICO National is the largest Italian-American Service organization and has chapters across the country who live by the motto “service above self.” For over 50 years the Verona Chapter of UNICO has donated funds to local organizations and has funded projects around town that support the wider community.
One of the most recent projects involved traffic safety in Verona. On Monday, March 20, UNICO members, Verona educators and administrators, Verona Department of Public Works employees and town leadership commissioned new pedestrian crosswalk safety lights by F.N. Brown Elementary School, funded with a $10,000 donation from Verona UNICO. “We are pleased to be able to support the safety of Verona residents, especially students and teachers. We are blessed to be able to fund this special project,” Chapter President Tom Malanga said at the time.
