You can get in the Earth Day Spirit in Verona with some environmental volunteering with the Hilltop Conservancy and the Verona Environmentql Commission.

On Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22, the Hilltop Conservancy will be planting trees on the Hilltop, and we need your help, anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This is part of the Conservancy’s multi-year effort to restore the Hilltop’s woodlands, which had been badly damaged by invasive plants and bugs. Sections of the five-acre site were cleared to the ground and the Conservancy then replanted each with native trees and shrubs.

The section that will be worked on this weekend is just east of the Highlands apartments, where the Conservancy cleared invasives last year and dug holes last month. All supplies are on site but volunteers should bring drinking water, work gloves, and a spade. It is expected that each volunteer will to plant and protect two to three trees.

Also on Saturday, the Verona Environmental Commission will hold a cleanup of Peckman Park from 9 a.m. to noon (rqin date Sunday, same time). Peckman Park is 11.62 acres at the end of Commerce Court along the Peckman River. The park is generally wooded, contains multiple steeply sloped areas and two wetland areas.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate, but those under 14 must be accompanied by a parent. There will be cake and coffee at special prices from The Compound Coffee Company and a musical performance by Verona guitarist, singer and songwriter Paul J. Baccash.
