Verona’s Community Garden is now taking applications for the 2023 growing season.

The garden is a group of 30 raised beds located behind the main municipal parking lot by H.B. Whitehorne Middle School in the center of town. You can apply for a full bed, which is 4 feet by 8 feet, or a half. If your application is chosen, you will need to pay $60 for the full bed and $30 for a half. There are also three elevated troughs reserved for families or individuals who need this kind of gardening set-up. A trough is $60 if your application is chosen.

Only one bed will be allowed per household, and the garden is open to Verona residents only. You’ve got to get your application in by Monday, February 20 and bed winners will be chosen on February 27. Another 25 names will be chosen for waiting list opportunities. You can fill out the application form here.

The Community Garden was created by the township and volunteers from Sustainable Verona and the Verona Environmental Commission, with backing from Sustainable Jersey, the PSEG Foundation, the Landsberger Foundation, the Board of Education, the Junior Woman’s Club of Verona and the Verona Education Association.

The garden is surrounded by tall fencing to keep deer out. No pesticides or harsh chemicals may be used in the garden, and gardeners must keep their plot weeded and make sure their plants don’t spread beyond their beds.
