Before the rain blew through here last night, the Verona High School boys soccer team blew through its game against Cedar Grove.
Brian Cleaver set the tone in the 8th minute, scoring on an assist from Evan Spong. Then, at the 12th minute, Ray Chesney sent the ball high into the air from the far side of the field. It looped over the head of Cedar Grove’s goalie before settling neatly in the back left corner of the net. Sean Stiefbold put Verona up 3-0 before the half on an assist from Mark Serra that left the entire Verona offense smiling. (Cedar Grove, not so much, and one player got a talking to from the ref after checking Riley Ying in a way that sent him cartwheeling.) Brandon Greene closed out what would be a 4-0 win with a goal in the 78th minute, again on an assist from Serra.
The win improves Verona’s record to 3-4 on the season. Verona will be back in action on Saturday, October 1, for its Senior Night and a game against Caldwell. That game will be on Sellitto Field starting at 5 p.m., with senior recognition just before. This year’s seniors are Chesney, Serra, and Stiefbold, as well as Jacob Vogel, Luke Ferrara and Jake Rizzi.
