Mr. Charles F. Sona, 70, died on May 26, 2022 at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, surrounded by his loving family.
Visiting will be held in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Ave., Verona on Thursday, June 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Lakeside Ave., Verona on Friday, June 3 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Graceland Memorial Park.
Born in Newark, Mr. Sona grew up and resided in Verona. He graduated from Our Lady of the Lake School and Essex Catholic High School in Newark. He earned an associate’s degree from William Paterson College.
Mr. Sona began his firefighting career as a volunteer with the Verona Volunteer Fire Department – Company 2 and continued his career as a professional firefighter with the City of West Orange with more than 25 years of service. He retired as captain in 2001. He also served on the Verona Rescue Squad.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles M. and Elaine J. (nee Eiflander) Sona.
Mr. Sona is survived by his loving wife, Laurie (nee Shanks) Sona; siblings, Judith Thatcher (Douglas), George W. Sona, Sr., William J. Sona (Donna), Lori Ann Ramos-James (Stephen) and Dawn Teets (William); stepson, Robert Tomasulo; and many nieces and nephews.
In his memory, contributions to the NJ Firemen’s Home, 565 Lathrop Avenue, Boonton, NJ 07005 would be greatly appreciated.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I was babysat by his parents until I was about 10 years old. I still remember the house on the corner of Elmwood and Claremont Aves, if my memory serves me right. Rest in peace.
