Yet another reminder of why you should lock your car.

The Verona Police Department says that, early Sunday, officers responded to the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Linn Drive after a resident reported observing someone peering into a parked vehicle. Lt. Greco, Sgt. Scheper and Officer Saldutto identified the silver Jeep Grand Cherokee as having been stolen from Rockaway.

The VPD says the drivers of the Jeep fled eastbound on Bloomfield Avenue at a high rate of speed and tried, but failed to turn left onto Fairview Avenue. The Jeep struck the curb and crashed into the building at 730 Bloomfield Avenue.

The two occupants then fled on foot. After a two-hour search, one 15-year-old male suspect was located and taken into custody with the assistance of the Cedar Grove Police and a Cedar Grove resident, and later released to a family member.

At the crash site, Detective Conroy went through the car for evidence that could identify the outstanding suspect. Verona’s Detective Bureau was able to recover from the car property belonging to multiple Verona residents whose vehicles had been burglarized before the chase and crash. The incident remains under investigation.

  1. My car was one of the vehicles vandalized.. I always found it a safe area but now I must say I would be more comfortable with cameras or if cops drove back there a little more often
