In the 7th inning this past Friday, Cedar Grove led Verona 12-11 in their annual baseball rivalry game at Yogi Berra Stadium. And then, with Ben Mackey and Julian Santorelli on base for VHS, Logan Colon came to the plate and set his sights on a different ending. He slammed one deep enough to get his teammates home—and to get the win for Verona.
An 8-run third inning had staked Verona to a 9-1 lead. But Cedar Grove rallied, scoring two in the fourth and another eight in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Panthers scored again. AJ Soriano led the scoring for Cedar Grove with a triple, a single and 3 RBIs. James LaCapra, Nicholas Russo and Alfonso Lombardi all doubled, and Lombardi also had two RBIs.
On the Verona side, there was strong hitting from Chris Baker, Ryan Radigan, Julian Santorelli and Sean Mulligan, who also struck out 13 in 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
Verona is at Columbia on Wednesday, May 18, before hosting MKA on Friday.
