The Verona Lions Club will be soon be mailing its annual White Cane appeal letter to Verona residents. The fundraiser gets its name from the fact that the white canes used by blind and visually impaired people were put into use by a Lions Club in Peoria, Illinois, in 1931. In 1936, New Jersey passed the White Cane Safety Law to give certain rights to visually impaired people using a white cane to walk outside.
The Lions Club of Verona was incorporated over 70 years ago in 1951 and the Verona Lions do much more than assist the visually impaired. The Club runs a hospital equipment loan program, gives annual service awards to high school seniors, makes holiday food donations, helps with local pandemic relief, and provides donations to prevent juvenile diabetes and suicide. The Club also recently made donations of cash and medical equipment and supplies to help people in the Ukraine.
Donations to the Verona Lions are tax deductible. You can respond to the White Cane appeal letter or donate online.
