On Saturday, February 26, 11 scouts from Troop 2 participated in the annual Lenape Trail District Klondike Derby held at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange. The Troop had two patrols (the Blackholes and the Spartans) competing against other units from the county. They had six hours to travel to 12 “towns” with their sleds and use their skills to complete unique challenges spread out between towns. Troop 2 adults ran a town where animal identification skills were tested.

While the weather was brisk, it did not lessen the boys’ spirits at all. They managed their time well and completed all the race requirements within the allotted time to the best of their abilities. At the end of the competition, when sun was setting, the boys were laughing and throwing a football while waiting for the competition results to be announced. It was a welcome surprise to learn the Spartans received the “Best in Town” award at Fort Sparks for fire building skills, teamwork, and team spirit.
