Verona’s new district, the 40th, is the crescent of blue near the upper right.

In late December, Verona was moved to a new Congressional district. Now comes word that our state Assembly and Senate district will be changing too.

The state’s Legislative Apportionment Commission is moving Verona to the 40th legislative district from the 26th. While our old district was centered on Morris and Sussex counties, our new one encompasses towns in Bergen and Passaic counties with a smattering of Essex.

Like our old district, the new one is currently represented by three Republicans: Sen. Kristin Corrado of Totowa and Assemblymen Christopher DePhillips and Kevin J. Rooney, both of Wyckoff. But it has a greater percentage of unaffiliated voters and registered Democrats (37.7% and 29.4%, respectively) than the 26th.

In Congress, Verona is being moved from the 11th district to the 10th. The change means that Verona will no longer be represented by Rep. Mikie Sherrill. Our new congressman will be Rep. Donald Payne Jr.. The two legislators are holding a joint town hall on Thursday.
